NEW BRUNSWICK – New Jersey’s top Senate lawmaker says one more Rutgers official needs to resign before it’s time to move beyond the controversy surrounding the university’s former basketball coach.
Senate President Steve Sweeney is calling for the resignation of Board of Governors member Mark Hershhorn, who he solely places blame on for not informing the board of the controversial coaching style of former coach Mike Rice.
“If he goes, … I’m done with this,” Sweeney said prior to the Thursday meeting.
“Mr. Hershhorn said he viewed the film, thought [Rice] should be fired and then never told the Board of Governors about it,” Sweeney said. “The Board of Governors did not have the ability to take action because they didn’t even know about it.”
Sweeney says Hershhorn chose not to make the other Board of Governors members aware of the videos when Hershhorn first viewed them late last year.
“One of their own chose not to inform them,” Sweeney said. “I put blame right where it belongs.”
Sweeney is expected to call for Hershhorn’s resignation during today’s Board of Governors meeting.
