Senator Jeff Van Drew (D-1) said he would thoroughly review all gun control proposals in both houses, but does not favor more gun laws and doubts he will change his mind.
“I do not support further restrictions to gun rights,” said Van Drew, running for re-election in the battleground 1st District.
Van Drew said lawmakers need to focus their efforts on mental health, punishment for crimes, and gangs. “We’re not stiff enough on penalties and we’re losing the drug war,” Van Drew told PolitickerNJ.com, and he also lamented the breakdown of the family structure as a cause of violence.
“Not one of the mass murders would have been prevented by further restrictions on gun laws in New Jersey,” said Van Drew, who gave Senate President Steve Sweeney (D-3) credit today for attempting to have an “intelligent and methodical” discussion on gun reform.
