TRENTON – Presumptive Democratic gubernatorial candidate Sen. Barbara Buono criticized Gov. Chris Christie Thursday for his veto of the early voting bill.
“Engaging more people in the democratic process goes beyond party politics. As community leaders, we should be promoting civic engagement, not stifling it,” she said in a release.
“This legislation would have made voting more accessible to people trying to balance their lives with their civic duty. Dozens of other states have already instituted in-person early vote programs, proving that New Jersey can implement a system in a fiscally responsible way.
“Governor Christie’s veto is yet another example of Republican politicians taking the cynical view that making voting more difficult will win them more elections.”
The bill drew opposition from Republicans and elections officials during the committee hearing process who questioned its costs and called it unnecessary in light of existing early voting laws.
