Firearms theft statute of limitations bill released

TRENTON – The Senate Law and Public Safety Committee amended and released bill S2801, which  would change the statute of limitations for theft of a firearm from five years to 10 years.

Under current law, theft of a firearm is a 3rd degree crime. Generally, prosecution for theft of a firearm must be commenced within five years.

The bill was substantially amended, since the bill originally called for removing the current five-year limitation altogether.

The committee released three firearms-related bills, and held a fourth one for amendments.
