GOP senators call on Sweeney to post sick-leave payout bill

TRENTON – Senate Republicans sent a letter to Senate President Steve Sweeney Thursday calling on him to post his measure to end expensive sick-leave payouts.

The 16 GOP senators linked the letter to two things: Sweeney’s decision recently to pull GOP-sponsored bills from committee agendas, and the news that Jersey City is facing a $5 million payout for sick leave for 25 retiring police officers.

The senators want Sweeney’s bill, S1564, posted for a vote at next Thursday’s Senate voting session.

Republican Sen. Joe Kyrillos has his own sick leave payout bill, S808, but since Republican-sponsored bills are not advancing, they want Sweeney’s bill posted.

“Our caucus is not concerned with getting credit, we just care about getting done what the people want and need,’’ states the letter.

Sweeney pulled Republican bills after not getting cooperation from Republican Sen. Tom Kean in providing votes related to one of his firearms bills at the last Senate voting session.
