In its first salvo of the campaign season, the Senate Republican Majority has targeted state Sen. Jeff Van Drew.
In a 60-second radio ad, the GOP goes after Van Drew’s tax record, highlighting the Republican strategy to tie Democrats to former Gov. Jon Corzine.
The ad will air on several stations in the Cape May, Cumberland and Atlantic County markets.
Van Drew is immensely popular in the 1st District, however the district has always leaned right. Republicans hope that Gov. Chris Christie will have coattails long enough to drag a Republican challenger – likely Susan Adelizzi Schmidt – to victory.
But Van Drew’s personal popularity among 1st District voters has carried him through, even in difficult years for Democrats. He is considered one of the more conservative members of the Democratic caucus.
