Bill to combine elections on one date passes

The Assembly passed bill A4237, which would change the date of the 2013 general election from Nov. 5 to Oct. 16, which is when the U.S. Senate special election is scheduled to take place.

The bill makes the point that changing the election date is allowed by the state Constitution.

The bill passed 44-31-3.

Assemblyman Reed Gusciora said it would avoid additional costs by combining the elections.

Minority Leader Jon Bramnick said Gov. Christie chose one of three difficult options, but ultimately decided to let the residents decide who their senator would be by having a special election.
