Bills signed: Cell phone penalties while driving, physicals for student athletes, more

TRENTON – Bill sponsors have said various pieces of legislation have been signed into law.

A3048: This creates several measures to ensure the health of student athletes, including making physical exams a requirement under New Jersey law for students in grades six through 12 who want to play school-sponsored sports.

Assembly members Patrick J. Diegnan, Jr., Thomas P. Giblin and Nancy Munoz are among the sponsors.

S69/A1080 is designed to crack down on the dangerous use of cell phones while driving. It will stiffen penalties for motorists who get caught driving while talking on a hand-held device or texting, particularly repeat offenders.

Also signed was S2532, which facilitates charitable donations. The bill prevents the Division of Taxation from considering a person’s charitable contributions as a factor in determining one’s income tax obligations. Sponsors included Sen. Steve Oroho.
