New York Magazine Tests New Homepage Design

We opened nymag.com this afternoon and noticed that something felt … off. Instead of the layout we were used to, the images looked bigger, different in a way that was hard to put a finger on. Then, we noticed a box in the upper-right-hand corner.

“Welcome! You have been chosen to preview a new version of the nymag.com homepage. You will see this page for a few weeks,” the text explained. “We’ll be asking for feedback throughout and would value your input. You are welcome to opt out at anytime.”

First of all, we’re honored to be chosen. Second of all, it’s always nice when you can opt out easily (until you can’t … ahem, Gmail).

As Capital NY’s Joe Pompeo noted when Jeb Reed went over to the magazine at the end of May, a spokersperson mentioned that the magazine was testing out a new homepage design. Don’t know why they chose us as a tester (or why now), but we’ll take it.

So far, it seems like the major change is that there are tabs on the left that show the magazine’s verticals: “Latest News,” “Daily Intelligencer,” “Vulture,” “The Cut” and “Grub Street.” By hovering over the tabs, you can choose which you want as as your default. Other than that, it’s hard to decide exactly what’s different, beyond overall feel. Just like a new format on Facebook, distrust and general dislike of change quickly give way to only the haziest memory of what it used to look like.

But surely things are different. Guess we’ll figure out exactly what in the next few weeks. And, of course, there is the option of going back to normal, in case it all gets to be too much.
