Sweeney bill to eliminate Rutgers board of trustees makes Senate voting agenda

TRENTON – A bill sponsored by the Senate’s top lawmaker that would dismantle Rutgers University’s Board of Trustees made it on the Senate agenda Thursday afternoon.

Senate President Steve Sweeney’s (D) bill would eliminate the board and give power to the university’s Board of Governors. The bill, S2902, is slated to be voted on this afternoon by the full Senate without first going through a committee hearing.

Republican Gov. Chris Christie has indicated publically he supports the bill’s stated intention.

Both Sweeney and Christie argue the two governing-board system is dysfunctional.
