The State Democratic Committee will host a “unity breakfast” Saturday, featuring gubernatorial candidate Barbara Buono and several party leaders.
Among the featured attendees is South Jersey power broker George Norcross III.
The event is scheduled for Saturday at the Heldrich Hotel in New Brunswick
The breakfast arose out of the ashes of the feud between South Jersey Democrats led by Norcross and Senate President Steve Sweeney and Buono over the chairmanship of the state party.
Buono had tapped Hudson County Assemblyman Jason O’Donnell for the spot, but Sweeney and others protested, saying O’Donnell would divide the party.
After a month-long standoff, the two sides agreed on Passaic County Democratic Chairman John Currie, who was voted in by the state committee earlier this month.
According to several sources in the Buono camp, the breakfast was one of several demands made by Buono to dump O’Donnell in favor of Currie. According to the sources, the agreement also included a fundraising commitment from Sweeney and Norcross of as much as $750,000.
Asked to confirm or deny the alleged commitment, Buono’s camp declined comment.
But South Jersey sources vehemently deny that there was a fundraising commitment included in the chairman talks and say there were no “terms.”
