Film London, the U.K.’s Channel 4 and London’s Whitechapel Gallery announced the 10 artists on the shortlist for their 2013 Jarman Award, which honors artists “whose work embraces the spirit and the legacy of [filmmaker Derek] Jarman’s highly experimental and risk-taking approach.” (Thanks to Frieze for tipping us off to the news.) The artists in the running for the prize, which carries a £10,000 ($15,200) purse and a commission from Channel 4:

Ed Atkins
Beatrice Gibson
Emma Hart
Rachel Maclean
Uriel Orlow
Charlotte Prodger
Hannah Sawtell
Grace Schwindt
John Smith
Jessica Warboys

Hard to pick a frontrunner among that group. Britons will be able to take a look at their work in a touring program that will hit FACT in Liverpool, CCA in Glasgow, Nottingham Contemporary and the Star and Shadow Cinema in Newcastle, in the run-up to the announcement of the winner on Nov. 6 at the Whitechapel Gallery. Internet users can take a look at a YouTube version of John Smith’s 1976 classic The Girl Chewing Gum below.
