Democratic gubernatorial hopeful Sen. Barbara Buono is hitting Gov. Chris Christie with an online ad criticizing the Republican incumbent for focusing on Iowa in 2016 – not New Jersey in 2013.
Buono says Christie has “plenty of time for Iowa” in the new 30-second video, but asks, “What about Irvington?”
The Buono camp’s first web ad of the general election argues the state needs an executive who will focus on local interests after November instead of national ambitions.
“I’m sure Iowa is lovely this time of the year, but as your governor, you’ll find me right here in New Jersey working for you,” she said.
A Christie campaign spokesman, Kevin Roberts, shot back by saying Democratic support for the governor’s re-election is ample evidence of Christie’s commitment to the Garden State.
“From holding the line on taxes, balancing budgets and reining in property taxes, Governor Christie has a proven record of putting people over politics to get things done for the people of New Jersey,” Roberts said in an e-mail. “That’s why leading Democrats across the state are deserting their party’s nominee and supporting his re-election bid.”
Robert’s e-mail went on to list the 32 Democratic officials who “have crossed the aisle to support” Christie’s campaign.
