Sussex Dems slap Booker for unauthorized use of slogan

Sussex County Democrats are upset at Newark Mayor Cory Booker, who they say used their slogan for the upcoming Senate primary without receiving their endorsement.

County Chairman Mike Busche sent an email to the Booker campaign, as well as to the campaigns of U.S. Rep. Rush Holt, U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone and Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver chastising Booker for using the slogan, “Sussex County Democrats 2013,” which has appeared on some mail-in ballots.

“We are disturbed by the suggestion arising from Mayor Booker’s slogan that he has been endorsed by the Sussex County Democratic Committee,” Busche wrote. “No candidate has been endorsed by the SCDC, nor has any candidate been authorized to use its name in connection with the August 13, 2013 primary contest. Furthermore, the Democratic 24th Legislative Campaign Committee has neither endorsed Mayor Booker nor authorized the use of any slogan implying such endorsement.”

Busche told the candidates that no decision had yet been made by the committee on support for the race, set for August 13.  The committee has planned a candidates night for July 17 to determine which candidate will get the nod from the Sussex Dems.

With the truncated primary, candidates will not get “the line” from the county committees, but instead are authorized to use the county’s slogan to show they are the candidate of choice.

A spokesman for Booker did not return an email for comment.
