Weekly Advance: Week of July 22

TRENTON – A fairly quiet week is scheduled in the Statehouse next week, but one item not yet scheduled has some people hoping that status may change.

Advocates for a referendum on using sales tax funds to support open space preservation say the Legislature has to reconvene from its summer recess by Aug. 1 to get this on the November ballot.

They are confident that voters will back the idea to use $200 million a year for preservation, but the issue now is ensuring it gets to the ballot at all.

While there is no consensus among supporters that this is the best option, many recognize this is possibly the best option realistically at this time.

One date that is approaching is the U.S. Senate primary on Aug. 13.  Expect the candidates to increase voter outreach and push their philosophies.

On the Democratic side, Newark Mayor Cory Booker has held a commanding lead over three challengers. And on the Republican side, former Bogota mayor Steve Lonegan has a firm grip on the reins, polls show.

A lot can change in just a few weeks, so expect to see and hear a great deal from the candidates.

In the Statehouse, the Joint Legislative Committee on Ethical Standards will meet on Tuesday.

And on Wednesday down in Toms River, the Department of Environmental Protection and the State Police will hold a public hearing – the second of three planned this summer – into nuclear emergency response plans.

This one will be at the Ocean County Administration Building.
