TRENTON – Gov. Chris Christie is expected to formally endorse the Republican candidate for U.S. Senate during a news conference next week, according to Senate hopeful Steve Lonegan.
Lonegan told NJTV’s Michael Aron during the taping of On the Record with Michael Aron that Christie will appear alongside him during a press conference. The event is planned for as early as Tuesday and will be followed by a public appearance by the seat’s current placeholder, Sen. Jeff Chiesa.
“I mean, the governor is coming in for a press conference endorsement next week. I have Jeff Chiesa coming out next week. I have the entire Republican Party behind me,” Lonegan told Aron during the Friday taping, according to a transcript.
When pressed by Aron whether it’s been made official that Christie would endorse him, Lonegan replied, “Yeah, we’re setting it up now.”
Lonegan referred to it as “no big secret” and said a news conference was being scheduled tentatively for Tuesday.
The full interview of On the Record will air at its usual time on Saturday at 2 p.m. and again Sunday at 10 a.m. on NJTV.
Christie has said in the lead up to the special primary election that he would endorse whoever Republican voters choose to challenge the Democratic candidate in the race to fill the term of the late Sen. Frank Lautenberg.
