Bayonne Mayor Mark Smith went door to door this week in what local Democrats interpreted as a move by the former chairman of the Hudson County Democratic Organization (HCDO) to save his job ahead of his 2014 re-election.
Amid rumors of labor leader Ray Greaves emerging as an establishment alternative to Smith, the mayor appeared intent on fighting for another four years, a source said.
Smith gave up his HCDO post after getting on U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez’s bad side in 2012.
Menendez wanted Hudson to stand with Donald Payne, Jr. for the 10th Congressional District seat, but Smith picked state Sen. Nia Gill (D-34).
Smith’s choice made life difficult for Menendez in Essex County, where Essex County Executive Joe DiVincenzo backed Payne in the Democratic Primary.
