Time started the week with some hiring news. The weekly news mag has hired Ryan Sager, who has been at The Wall Street Journal, to be the editorial director of Time ideas. Callie Schweitzer, Vox Media’s director of marketing and communication and favorite on social media lists (her Twitter feed was lauded by Time magazine earlier this year), will become the Time‘s director of digital innovation. And Chris Wilson will be Time‘s interactive graphics designer. Mr. Wilson, who was last at Yahoo News, where he was director of news interactives, is a former senior editor at Slate.

We are delighted to announce three new hires as part of our continuing expansion of TIME and TIME.com.
RYAN SAGER joins us as Editorial Director, TIME Ideas. Ryan comes to TIME from The Wall Street Journal, where he developed and launched Review, the popular WSJ Weekend section devoted to essays, books and ideas. His instinct for surprising, provocative stories has produced some of Review’s most memorable pieces, including the Journal’s most-read story of 2012 on French parenting, “How To Stop Hospitals From Killing Us,” “Stop Panicking About Bullies,” and “Why Airport Security Is Broken—and How to Fix It,” written by the former administrator of the TSA. Capturing the ideas that shape the national conversation and set the agenda are of course very much part of TIME’s DNA, and Ryan’s experience will help us build on that tradition across all our platforms.
Previous to the Journal, Ryan was on the editorial board of the New York Post and was on the founding staff of the New York Sun. A Connecticut native, he majored in history at George Washington University and is author of the 2006 book, “The Elephant in the Room: Evangelicals, Libertarians and the Battle to Control the Republican Party.”
CALLIE SCHWEITZER will join us as Director of Digital Innovation. Named last year as one of Forbes‘ 30 Under 30 in Media (and by TIME as having one of the 140 Best Twitter Feeds), Callie has distinguished herself by putting strategy into action in building digital brands. As Director of Marketing and Communications at Vox Media, publisher of The Verge, SB Nation and Polygon, Callie helped introduce and launch Polygon, the video game vertical, and Vox Creative, an in-house creative services wing, among many other accomplishments. Before joining Vox, Callie was Deputy Publisher of Talking Points Memo, responsible for management of mobile, video and content partnerships and increasing audience growth. She has written for a variety of outlets, including a recent widely shared post on Medium about how we find our news.
A Summa Cum Laude graduate of USC’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, Callie was also, by the way, twice a summer intern at People, so this is a welcome back for her. In her new editorial role at TIME, Callie will focus on increasing traffic and audience engagement. She’ll also oversee our social media team, newsletters and a variety of other new product initiatives and content partnerships.
CHRIS WILSON, a pioneer of interactive journalism, comes to TIME from Yahoo as Interactive Graphics Designer. As the director of news interactives for Yahoo News and editor of The Signal blog, he wrote and coded dozens of innovative features on politics and policy, from “The Top 9,486 Ways White House Spokesman Jay Carney Won’t Answer Your Question” to the Jack Lew Signature Generator.
Before joining Yahoo, Chris was a senior editor at Slate, where he founded Slate Labs, winner of Advertising Age’s 2010 Media Vanguard Award for Best New Web-Publishing Idea Factory. He was also the author of a five-part feature on how the United States military located Saddam Hussein using social network theory. Chris is a graduate of the University of Virginia and a former editor of the Cavalier Daily. He lives in Washington, D.C.
