Christie today announced a Volunteer Emergency Services for Christie coalition and unveiled its statewide leadership team.

The coalition is led by Statewide Volunteer EMS Co-Chairs Frank Smith (Captain of the Moonachie First Aid & Rescue Squad), Howard Meyer (President of the NJ First Aid Council) and Statewide Volunteer Fire Chair Michael Gonnelli (Mayor of Secaucus and former Chief of the Secaucus Volunteer Fire Department).

“I am honored to have the support of volunteer firefighters and EMS leaders – the men and women who risk their lives every day to serve their communities and keep their neighbors safe,” Christie said in a release.

“Taking on that risk in the most dangerous of circumstances also shows that they are true heroes and leaders when they are most needed. And I cannot thank our volunteer community enough for the work they did and lives they saved during Superstorm Sandy.

“I am honored to have the support of so many of these extraordinary people in this campaign and, as a state, we are grateful for what they do every single day.”

Christie has drawn support from first-responders for, among other things, vetoes of bills that the administration said would have burdened volunteers with unnecessary regulations and expenses, as well as changed the EMS network structure.

“Last year, amidst the most catastrophic natural disaster in New Jersey’s history, our state’s volunteer first responders acted with tremendous courage and fidelity, ensuring the safety and well-being of residents in need across the state,” said Gonnelli. “Governor Christie has proven without a doubt that he understands the positive impact our volunteer first responders have on their communities and stands up to protect that role for us.”
