Well, that’s certainly creative.

A new negative mailer attacking City Council candidate Ritchie Torres features several typical quotes from news reports, as well as a rather curious entry under the The New York Observer‘s logo that actually comes from our comments section.

“This young man has been a sellout his whole life. He was a lazy student who did not live up to his potential, skipping class and thinking he was smarter than his teachers,” reads the quote, which explains in smaller font that the actual attribution is to “Andrew Netti, comment in NY Observer.”

The mailer was produced by City Action Coalition, a conservative group of clergy members accused of targeting openly gay candidates.

Councilman Brad Lander, who is waging a legislative fight to tighten regulations on independent expenditures, which have poured millions of dollars into this year’s races, flagged the mailer yesterday on his “Toxic to Democracy” blog.

“This may be the first mailer we’ve seen that quotes at length from a blog comment section to make its case,” the post reads, noting an element of irony in the mailer’s other arguments. “City Action Coalition also has the gall to criticize Torres for having the support of another independent expenditure effort.”

City Action Coalition, which describes itself as “a multi-ethnic, multi-denominational movement of faith based leaders, organizations and concerned citizens united together to advocate Judeo/Christian values in public policy,” listed an unworking contact number online and could not be reached for comment.

Mr. Lander’s blog, however, is more critical: “City Action Coalition is funded by a social conservative with a history of homophobic statements. The group is focusing on races with an LGBTQ candidate, trying to prevent gay candidates from winning their elections.”

The commentator’s critique of Mr. Torres came in response to a Politicker story noting that Mr. Torres, who is openly gay, was quickly becoming the front-runner for the South Bronx seat now held by term-limited Councilman Joel Rivera.
