Weekly Advance: Week of Sept. 23

TRENTON – Crickets.

It’s the most likely thing any Statehouse passers-by will hear if they step underneath the Golden Dome.

The week’s legislative calendar is empty as of late last week, with the lone exception of one committee hearing that’s scheduled to take place nowhere near Trenton.

The Assembly Transportation, Public Works and Independent Authorities Committee will be on the road in Hoboken Monday to discuss public transportation vehicles. The discussion, centered on safety and enforcement of jitneys, comes after the recent death of an 8-month-old baby in July.

Angelie Paredes died over the summer after a commuter van struck a lamp post, which fell on her as she was being transported in a stroller.

The panel is slated to hear testimony from invited guests on the safety of jitneys.

Legislative calendars, or lack thereof aside, the news of the week will continue to be on statewide elections.

Little has changed over the course of the past week, but we can certainly expect things to pick up across the state as the Oct. 16 U.S. Senate special election and November regular elections near.
