Weekly Advance: Week of Sept. 9

TRENTON – If it doesn’t feel like the summer has come and gone yet, Monday will surely drive the point home.

The Legislature, at least the General Assembly, is in full session the beginning of the week to take up a handful of bills – the majority of which, so far, are proposals sent back to lawmakers from Gov. Chris Christie.

Among the proposals slated to be voted on by the Assembly are amended versions of the Economic Opportunity Act, firearms reporting rule changes and the state’s medical marijuana program as it pertains to minors.

But Monday’s session aside, the stage is set for a quiet week in the Statehouse with the lone exception so far a Senate Education Committee hearing on Thursday.

New Jersey politicos can continue to expect most of the week’s focus and excitement to be on statewide races.

Sen. Barbara Buono will be coming off a week that put a good amount of focus on comments she may or may not have made about the incumbent governor’s waistline. The perceived crack dominated most of the campaign news for the week and, Buono argues, was a convenient excuse for Christie to take the focus off the real issues.

The state lawmaker hit back Friday afternoon, telling reporters she’s “got 99 problems” with Chris Christie, but his “weight ain’t one.”

The mission of the Buono campaign won’t change much this week: Work to close the gap in a battle against a popular Republican governor in a blue state. And for Christie: Maintain the strong lead.

The only difference now is the unofficial start of the gubernatorial election, Labor Day, is, well, officially off. And now, all bets are off.
