The U.S. Capitol was locked down briefly this afternoon after a woman reportedly rammed a security barrier near the White House then headed to the Capitol where she reportedly was shot by police.

Several reports say the woman was killed and that a young girl, who was also in the car, was unharmed.  A police officer was reportedly injured.

Staffers at the Capitol reported that the building was locked down and they were told to “shelter in place” and stay away from windows.

Less than an hour after the incident began, staffers and members received an “all clear.”

According to reports from the scene, the shooting occurred at Maryland Avenue Northeast and Second street, about two blocks from the Capitol.
