Led by Essex, North Jersey counties give Booker big numbers in U.S. Senate race

NEWARK – Let the chest thumping begin.

Left in a roadside ditch in a backroom leadership war, Essex County reanimated itself tonight with a strong show of support for Newark Mayor Cory Booker in the U.S. Senate contest.

Essex gave Booker, the Democratic candidate, his biggest countywide plurality as he recorded a lopsided unofficial 80-19% victory over his Republican opponent.

Booker won Essex County with 75,234, the biggest single performance by a county in the state.

As a bloc, South Jersey gave Booker 85,574 votes, but the contests were closer – in most cases by far. Booker won Atlantic 52-46%; Burlington 52-47%, and Gloucester 50-49%. The Democrat got his biggest margin of victory in Camden: 64-35%.

In the south, Booker unofficially lost Cape May to Lonegan – 41-58%; and Salem, 41-58%.

As a bloc, North Jersey (Essex, Hudson, Passaic and Bergen counties) recorded 186,198 votes for Booker.
