Sen. Barbara Buono’s gubernatorial bid has the backing of the state’s newly established South Asian American Caucus, according to state Democratic officials.
Buono joined other Democratic officials for the caucus’ inaugural event Tuesday night in Edison. According to the New Jersey Democratic State Committee, the Garden State has the third largest South Asian population in the country following California and New York.
The newly established caucus aims to give the community a platform within the Democratic State Committee to advocate for South Asian residents. The caucus is prepared to mobilze the community is support of Buono, said Satish Poondi, co-chairman of committee’s South Asian American Caucus, in a statement
“Members of our community, in preparation for November 5th, are engaged in voter registration drives across the state,” he said. “The caucus will build upon that work and mobilize our community to support Democratic leaders, such as Senator Buono, who have demonstrated their commitment to New Jersey’s South Asian community.”
