ASBURY PARK – Cheers erupted inside Gov. Chris Christie headquarters a moment ago after CNN projected the Republican incumbent the winner of tonight’s gubernatorial race.
The news network called the race for Christie over his Democratic gubernatorial challenger Sen. Barbara Buono immediately after polls closed. The announcement was immediately followed by The Associated Press calling the race for Christie.
Christie chose Asbury Park to celebrate tonight’s victory.
In 2009, the county helped take him over the line during his first gubernatorial run against former Gov. Jon Corzine and, more recently, Christie’s response in shore towns like Asbury Park following Superstorm Sandy helped rocket him to popularity in the polls.
