TRENTON – We’re back in the swing of things.

Monday will be a packed day in the New Jersey Statehouse as members of both chambers will gather under the Golden Dome for a day of votes.

Nearly a dozen Assembly committees are slated for the day and Senate lawmakers will gather for a full voting session. Assembly lawmakers will take up proposals on everything from tuition, Megan’s Law reform, mortgage assistance and panic alarms at schools to responsible fatherhood bills.

Meanwhile, in the upper chamber, an interesting battle is brewing over the matter of pig gestation.

Sen. Ray Lesniak’s (D-20) bill that would establish animal cruelty offenses for cruel confinement of gestating pigs may have been vetoed by Gov. Chris Christie in June, however the bill is slated to hit the Senate floor, again.

This time, lawmakers will attempt to override the governor’s veto.

The potential for an interesting battle comes after the Senate passed the bill in May with bipartisan support (by a vote of 29-4). Now, Republican lawmakers will need to switch their votes if they want to avoid giving Christie his first loss on a veto override.

Senate Minority Leader Tom Kean Jr., who recently defied Christie when he refused to step away from his leadership position, is among the GOP lawmakers who originally supported the bill.

Will Kean and others defy the governor again by refusing to change their votes, or will they play nice and leave Christie’s record with the Legislature unable to override his vetoes untarnished?

League of Municipalities

Atlantic City will host the 98th Annual New Jersey State League of Municipalities Conference this week.

The annual event was canceled last year following the devastation of Superstorm Sandy. Now, league members and many of the who’s who of New Jersey politics will gather in AC for the three-day conference.
