TRENTON – An increasing number of offenders being sentenced by a municipal court judge could be ordered to perform community service instead of paying a fine, according to a bill released from committee Monday.
Senate lawmakers unanimously released a bill from committee that would allow municipal judges to dole out orders for community service instead of ordering offenders to pay a fine. The bill, S2309 and A3254, would remove language from current rules that requires offenders to first demonstrate they’re unable to pay a penalty or default on an imposed fine.
The bill cleared the Senate Judiciary Committee following little discussion from lawmakers.
