Legendary Weequahic HS closing and other proposed changes intensify debate in Newark

A plan by the Newark Schools Superintendent to close Weequahic High School and alter other Newark public schools and replace them with charter schools has some residents hopping mad.

The issue has landed in the middle of a fast intensifying mayor’s race where South Ward Councilman Ras Baraka has the double edge of serving as the principal of Central High School.

According to documents obtained by PolitickerNJ.com, in addition to Weequahic, the Newton School is also slated for closure, and Shabazz and West Side will get buzzed.

Candidates in the mayor’s race fret about process and the lack of parental involvement, while perennial students of Newark history worry about the shuttering of Weequahic, the alma mater of celebrated novelist Philip Roth.
