A 27-year-old San Diego man has been arrested in connection with a revenge porn website hosting more than 10,000 sexually explicit photos—and authorities say he was also using a reputation management website to extort the revenge porn victims.
The California Department of Justice arrested Kevin Christopher Bollaert, the New York Post reports, and charged him with 31 felony counts of conspiracy, identity theft and extortion.
They say he created ugotposted.com in 2012, a revenge porn site that required posters (typically jilted ex lovers) include subjects’ full names, locations, ages and Facebook profiles, making this site somehow even more morally bankrupt than others we’ve covered.
Some of the revenge porn victims would discover their photos on ugotposted.com and seek their removal. Conveniently, Mr. Bollaert allegedly also ran a second website, changemyreputation.com, where he’d extort victims and offer to remove the content for $299.99 to $350 via PayPal, the Post says.
He made $900 per month on advertising and received tens of thousands of dollars in PayPal payments, the Post reports.
This isn’t the first time a revenge porn enthusiast created a reputation management site to extort victims, though we wish it would be the last. On the bright side, though, it looks like Hunter Moore was wrong about California’s anti-revenge-porn efforts being futile.
