BRICK – Democrat Angela Gandolfo confirmed on Wednesday at the Brick reorganization meeting that she is challenging Republican incumbent U.S. Rep. Chris Smith (R-4) in the 2014 Congressional race.
A Millstone Township resident, Gandolfo has worked as a social researcher and as a journalist. In a Daily Kos posting on Tuesday, Gandolfo criticized Smith for voting to support the October federal government shutdown.
She also chided Smith for voting in November to prohibit federal regulation of hydraulic fracturing, the energy-extraction process known as “fracking,” on federal and tribal lands, as well as for a December vote against the extension of unemployment insurance benefits to the long-term unemployed.
“[Smith] caused obstructionism and jeopardized our health [and] wealth in dangerous ways,” Gandolfo wrote.
Gandolfo faces an uphill battle against Smith. A 33-year incumbent, Smith was elected in 1980 as part of the Reagan Revolution. A vocal pro-life advocate who strongly supported Hurricane Sandy relief efforts, Smith has won more than 60 percent of the vote since the mid-1980s.
