Veteran state Senator Shirley Turner (D-15), Lawrenceville, is mulling over a run for Congress in the 12th District.
“I’ve been receiving all kinds of calls today urging me to run,” said Turner, a former longtime chair of the Senate Education Committee and leader in the Democratic Caucus.
“I will have to talk it over with my family and political advisers,” she added. “It is a Democratic district. I would be able to win the race by virtue of the fact that I already represent a large portion of the district.”
Turner said she was shocked on learning of the retirement announcement of U.S. Rep. Rush Holt (D-12) and praised his service.
She noted her interest in serving as a woman representative of the district, where “52% of the voters are women.”
Turner said she will carefully consider a run, confer with her constituents, and decide in the coming days.
