The City Council was the host of a slightly unusual event this afternoon during a legislative session: Brooklyn Councilwoman Inez Barron read a poem out loud as her colleagues snapped their fingers to the beat.

“We taught them how to diagnose and do brain surgery. We taught them that geometry and then we taught them trig, physics and astronomy,” rhymed Ms. Barron as she recited the tribute to Black History Month. “Oh yes, oh yes we did.”
