Starting May 1st, please direct anybody who has ever said “They should totally write a TV show about my dog/weird cousin/other personalities!” to NBC’s new crowdsourced comedy submission site, NBCPlayground.com.
As announced during NBCUniversal’s Summer Press Day (upfront now being a dirty word), the new site’s goal is to “discover fresh, comedic voices in an innovative, new way.” There is even a handy comic to show you how to submit, which is actually kind of edgy for a channel whose version of “taking a gamble” was The Michael J. Fox Show and Sean Saves the World.
The shows will be judged by a panel of talent, including Aziz Ansari, Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, Mindy Kaling, Adam McKay, Seth Meyers, Mike Schur, Amy Poehler, and several others. You may notice that several people on that list no longer have NBC shows, and some of them actually have shows on competing networks. So we don’t know how that works…perhaps they’d get an executive producer credit, or else NBC will have them duke it out for the opportunity to mentor some young writer, like a showrunner version of The Voice. Which, hey, might not be such a bad idea, considering how well that show does in the ratings.
