Principal of the popular alt-everything Brooklyn New School since 2000, Ms. Allanbrook is among the city’s most outspoken critics of high-stakes testing. This year, nearly two-thirds of her students opted out. She’s not afraid to buck intellectual elitism, either: she won’t countenance gifted-and-talented classes at her school. It hasn’t discouraged demand: more than 1,500 families applied for 175 seats ahead of the 2013-14 academic year.
