Dominican group backs Baraka in Newark mayor’s contest

The Dominican American Elected and Appointed Officials Caucus of NJ, DAEOC-NJ today formally endorsed the candidacy of Ras Baraka for Mayor of the City of Newark and Lionel Leach, CWA President of Local 1039, as Councilman at Large for the City of Irvington.

Manuel Segura, Caucus Chairman, presented the following statements:

“The Dominican American Elected and Appointed Officials Caucus of NJ endorses Ras Baraka as the next mayor of the great city of Newark.  The DAEOC-NJ shares Mr. Baraka’s vision of making Newark safer, increasing its small business representation and elevating Newark’s presence in the international economic arena.  Mr. Baraka, since his youth, has been an highly effective, inclusive leader, who has fought for a greater quality of education and recreation for Newark’s youths and in improving opportunities for Newark’s residents.  The DAEOC-NJ enthusiastically supports his ‘putting people first’ progressive agenda of service.

“The DAEOC-NJ is proud to endorse Mr. Lionel Leach as Councilman at Large for the City of Irvington.  A respected labor leader and advocate, the DAEOC-NJ recognizes his hard work as a fighter for New Jersey’s middle class and working families.  We are confident that with his impressive career in labor leadership and legislation he will serve the citizens of Irvington with the utmost dedication and ethics. The DAEOC-NJ, considers Lionel a friend and trusted Advisor and enthusiastically supports him.  The City of Irvington will have a humane, and highly qualified, forward thinking representative in Mr. Leach. “
