Newark mayor’s race: Fulop, Codey come to Newark to stand with Baraka, anticipating final victory

NEWARK – Anticipating victory for their preferred candidate, Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop and former Governor and current State Senator Richard Codey (D-27), both backers of Newark mayoral candidate Ras Baraka over rival candidate Shavar Jeffries, felt very confident after polls closed at 8 p.m..

“I feel sensational,” Codey said as city precinct numbers rolled in at the Baraka party at the Robert Treat Hotel. “Money can’t buy happiness or an election. Ras Baraka has won. The [Essex County] machine has been put out to pasture.”

“It was a real tough election, and I think the work starts tomorrow to heal Newark,” Fulop told PolitickerNJ.com “I’m excited tonight, and I’m excited to work with Ras going forward.”
