NJ AFL-CIO President Charles Wowkanech joined Assemblyman Tom Giblin (D-34), president of the Essex County Central Labor Council, in the field in Newark today in GOTV support mode of the mayoral candidacy of South Ward Councilman Ras Baraka.
Wowkanech estimates the AFL-CIO has 26-27 interlocking unions on the streets, for a total of 2,000 members who will have worked on Baraka’s behalf by day’s end.
“This is what we’ve been doing for the past 18 years,” said Wowkanech. “We’ve been in here 10 or 15 weeks now in this race, the central labor council. This is what we do.”
Two-hundred and fifty members worked the streets and phones this morning.
When people get off work later those numbers will jump dramatically, Wowkanech said.
“This is an important race to us,” the labor leader said, referring in part to labor’s push to protect the interests of 5,000 to 6,000 teachers facing the overhauls in the One Newark Plan.
