Beyond water, yeast, malt and hops, no one really knows the ingredients of their favorite beers.
We’ve all heard the urban legend — especially popular among a certain fear-mongering type of vegan — that some beers are brewed using fish bladders. And even if that doesn’t freak out the health conscious, the knowledge that beer companies aren’t legally required to disclose any of their ingredients might.
That’s why food blogger Vani Hari is pressuring American beer giants Anheuser-Busch and MillerCoors to reveal just what they’re putting in their incredibly popular products.
“Transparency is all I’m asking for,” she wrote on her blog, Food Babe. “Just tell us what we’re drinking.”
Some of the ingredients that beer might legally include are high fructose corn syrup, artificial flavors and colors, stabilizers that are linked to intestinal inflammation, ingredients that are also found in airplane de-icing liquid, genetically modified ingredients and, yes, fish bladders.
“We know more about what’s in a bottle of Windex,” Ms. Hari points out in the video posted below.
The blogger has started a petition to get Anheuser-Busch and MillerCoors to reveal their ingredients. It already has more than 40,000 signatures.
Meanwhile, ABCNews contacted Peter Marino, a representative from MillerCoors, who said the ingredients are properietary information.
“That being said, we are happy to provide allergen information, which, in our case, involves wheat,” he said. “We do not use nuts or dairy in the brewing process. And we don’t use fish bladders either.”
Reps from both MillerCoors and Anheuser-Busch also said they don’t use any of the nasty stuff mentioned in Ms. Hari’s video. Still, they could be using other iffy ingredients — plus, people are allergic to a lot more than just wheat, nuts and dairy.
We’re all for more transparency when picking what to stuff down our gullets. We just hope this doesn’t affect drone-powered beer delivery.
