In the aftermath of Bayonne, Sacco on Smith’s loss: ‘Predictable’

Powerful Hudson County state Sen. Nick Sacco (D-32), North Bergen, said he knew Bayonne was going to be tight.

“You could see that,” Sacco told PolitickerNJ as he finished his chairing this afternoon of the Transportation Committee.

But ultimately he described as “predictable” Mayor Mark Smith’s loss to Police Captain Jimmy Davis.

“If you want to fight with local unions and rent controlled tenants, I think it’s always a problem,” in a nod to two local battles losing incumbent Bayonne Mayor Smith had undertaken in the Hudson County maritime city. If you fight with your constituents there is a price. Mark also had a habit of making himself an enemy of certain powerful people.”

One of those people was U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ), infuriated by Smith’s decision to back state Sen. Nia Gill over Donald Payne, Jr. in the 2012 CD12 Democratic Primary.

Sacco didn’t name Menendez by name.

As for Bayonne’s mayor-elect, Davis, “He has shown up to HCDO [Hudson County Democratic Organization] events,” Sacco said of the newcomer. “He’s trying to be part of the overall structure.”
