Running for re-election against former Councilwoman Gayle Chaneyfield-Jenkins, Darrin Sharif says he’s confident he will win tonight and return as councilman of the 2nd Ward.
Sharif is in his second runoff contest in four years. In 2010, he shocked the political establishment when he took down incumbent Central Ward Councilman Charles Bell.
With seven hours to go before the polls close, Sharif said the narrative boils down to past versus future. “That’s been the story,” the councilman told PolitickerNJ. “We’re moving forward, not looking back.”
Chaneyfield-Jenkins served in the Sharpe James years, and runs with the support of Mayor-elect Ras Baraka, who seeks a majority on the City Council.
“We’re not taking anything for granted,” said Sharif, who earlier this year abandoned his own mayoral bid to focus on winning back his council seat.
