Veteran Johnson leaving Rice’s office to take job as COS in Newark City Hall

Essex County Freeholder Rufus I. Johnson is leaving his longtime job as chief-of-staff to state Senator Ronald L. Rice (D-28), Newark, to become the chief-of-staff of West Ward Councilman-elect Joe McCallum.

Johnson has been with Rice since 1982.

“He has a great understanding of running government at the local, county and state levels,” said Rice.

“He’s not leaving my side. If you see Rufus, you see me. If you see Joe, you see me.

“I’m not losing him. The difference is I’m not paying him,” the senator cracked.
