It’s a sad, sad day when you come to value the quality of your selfies more than you do your own pet.
The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) says hundreds of black cats are being abandoned by their owners. The reason? They’re apparently not photogenic enough for their owners’ selfies.
The UK animal welfare charity has seen a rise in the number of black cats being abandoned and reports that 70 percent of felines currently in their care are black.
“There are a number of reasons for us having so many black cats, including the fact that black animals tend not to photograph as well as other cats with more distinctive markings,” a RSPCA spokesperson told The Daily Mail.
We’re truly sorry about your lack of Instagram likes, black cat owning millennials, but we’d like to inform you that there are a few other options you should consider before you carelessly disregard your helpless animal that loves you.
If you’re struggling with your black cat’s failure to impress your friends on social media, you could:
- Get a second, more photogenic cat
- Take a selfie with a friend’s non-black cat
- Find a stray, non-black cat for your selfie, and then give it some food, love and attention as a thank-you
- Learn to work Photoshop wonders on your hideous black cat
- Program an “Instagram for Cats” app (the dog version already exists)
- This one’s crazy, but bare with us: you could, perhaps, take a selfie without your cat
- Take a selfie with your black cat BECAUSE YOU LOVE HIM, not for likes
