Tavarez new council president in Paterson

Paterson – At its reorganization meeting today, the Paterson City Council voted in 5th Ward Councilman Julio Tavarez as the governing body’s new council president.

Tavarez outdueled veteran 3rd Ward Councilman Bill McCoy for the job.

He mustered the support of outgoing Council President Andre Saeygh, Councilman Mohammed Akhtaruzzaman, Councilman Alex Mendez and Councilwoman Maritza Davila; in addition to supplying his own vote.

The win was a pyrrhic one of sorts for Sayegh, whom Tavarez backed over Mayor Jose “Joey” Torres.

McCoy had backed Torres, and had the support of key Torres ally veteran Councilman Ken Morris, Jr. Councilwoman Ruby Cotton and Councilman Anthony Davis likewise unsuccessfully contributed their support. Tavarez new council president in Paterson
