At the grizzled old age of 22, I don’t really enjoy those feelings of the times passing me by, or not getting “kids these days.” I’m not old! I’m very young! I bought an iPhone 5C the other day (6 of them??) But sometimes something comes along that makes me feel very old indeed. And today that comes in the form of the news that Hatsune Miku will perform live October 8 on The Late Show with David Letterman.
Hatsune Miku, of course, is a virtual holographic pop star from Japan.
At the risk of sounding incredibly culturally insensitive, that video is funnier to me than anything David Letterman has said in the last five years. But people love her (it?)! The 3D projection has reportedly performed for more than 85,000 people, and last spring opened for Lady Gaga because of course that happened. And here I am thinking it’s kind of creepy (the way it moves) and more than a little scared that the song she sings in that video is called “World Is Mine.” In 2025 that’s probably going to be our national anthem in reverence to our 3D overlord.
If you don’t get enough of Hatsune on The Late Show, and I don’t see how you possibly could, she (it? please someone tell me) will perform at the Hammerstein Ballroom October 17 and 18 as part of the worldwide “Hatsune Miko Expo.” At the risk of sounding even more culturally insensitive, Japan, you crazy.
Good thing I live over here, where nothing weird or oddly holographic ever happens ever.
