Senate President Steve Sweeney (D-3) regaled the crowd tonight gathered for a Middlesex County Democratic Committee fundraiser organized by Chairman Kevin McCabe.
There were ravenous political animal glances around the room in the midst of this fledgling gubernatorial contest pitting Sweeney, Phil Murphy and Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop against each other.
The threesome tripped good-naturedly over one another a week ago at a Middlesex County event, as Sweeney and Fulop stifled irritation at Murphy’s apparent revved up public party event schedule.
Signaling their early assessment that everything’s in play, prior to a Mercer event last week, Sweeney and Fulop simultaneously surfaced at – of all places – a far-flung Hunterdon County Democratic function.
Murphy, the former U.S. Ambassador to Germany, made another appearance – a headliner similar to Sweeney’s Middlesex appearance tonight – earlier this week in front of a crowd of Passaic County Democrats.
“Corzine with a personality” received a warm introduction from Passaic County Democratic Chairman John Currie, who also chairs the state Democratic Committee.
To date Murphy’s been less visible than the two others.
Tonight, McCabe projected unfailing charm and urbanity, according to one party source, when asked to describe the chairman’s assessment of Sweeney and the overall dynamics of the well-attended gathering.
