After a lot of backroom wrangling this week, At-Large Newark Councilman Carlos Gonzalez will stay put on the council, a source told PolitickerNJ.
Hoping to secure a more solid five-person majority on the governing body, Mayor Ras Baraka nominated Gonzalez for a judgeship in exchange for stepping away from the city council.
The veteran Gonzalez hovered at the edge of a career change – then backed down, the source told PolitickerNJ this morning.
His decision to stay is a win for the North Ward allies of Essex County Executive Joe DiVincenzo – North Ward Councilman Anibal Ramos chief among them – who maintain a firmer grip on their block of the council by virtue of Gonzalez remaining.
His departure would have enabled Baraka’s allies to call upon South Ward Democratic Committee Chairman Pat Council, an ally of the mayor.
