We’ve known about the Apple Watch for less than a week, and already developers have figured out a way to use it for sex. Typical.
Close Encounter is a blind-dating app from the future that will match you up with nearby singles and lead you straight to them, all from the convenience of your wrist. The app was announced in a Medium post full of gorgeous mock-ups that repeatedly refers to the daters using the apps as “the humans” — an attempt either to humanize the object of your overwhelming lust, or make you feel like The Terminator for using it.
“No chat, no bullshit,” the post brags. “Just share your location and follow the line until you reach your match.”
Close Encounters shows people near you as little blips on a radar. You can see basic bits of data about them, and if you get a match, it’ll lead you right to them.
“It’s similar to blind dating, that’s why we tease you with some bits of information about the human,” the post says.

Close Encounter is made by the same team as 3nder, an existing app that allows you to find partners for group sex. Call it “the Tinder for threesomes,” because calling it “3nder” is nearly impossible — the Betabeat team debates how to pronounce it just about every week.
One pleasant difference between Close Encounter and other online dating apps is the absence of profile pics. 3nder says this for the sake of surprise — or abject terror, depending on the outcome — but it also cuts out some of the superficiality of the current trend of hot-or-not style apps.
It also holds the promise of getting you laid way faster. If it can deliver on that promise, we imagine Close Encounter has a bright future, even if it’s only among smartwatch-toting Apple zealots.
