Bergen County Exec’s race: GOP Sheriff Saudino steps back from apparent backing of Tedesco, Dem ticket

HACKENSACK – Bergen County Sheriff Michael Saudino, a Republican, stepped back from his apparent declaration of support for Democratic Bergen County Executive candidate Jim Tedesco and the Democratic freeholder candidates.

“When I first ran for public office, I made a commitment to the public that I would be the Sheriff for all of Bergen County. I made it clear that I was a law enforcement professional first, not a politician. The comments that I made over the weekend are proof of that,” said Saudino in a written statement on Monday. “In no way, were my comments intended to be a public endorsement of any candidates for office this year. Regrettably, after watching a video of my comments, it is clear that there is no other way to interpret it.  It was a mistake and for that I apologize.

“To be clear, I am not endorsing any candidates for office this year,” Saudino added. “None of the candidates running for office have approached me to discuss where they stand on the issues concerning public safety in Bergen County, which is my primary concern.”
