Sweeney, a potential 2017 Democratic gubernatorial candidate, has a South Jersey power base and counts South Jersey Democratic power broker George Norcross Iii among his main allies.

Jeffries received support not only from Norcross, but Essex County Executive Joe DiVincenzo, perhaps Sweeney’s strongest North Jersey ally.

Chaneyfield Jenkins is an Essex County employee under DiVincenzo.
